Mara Bogdanović Rosandić is considered to be the first educated female photographer.

She was born in a wealthy and respected family in Ruma (Vojvodina). Like many other girls born in the 19th and early 20th century, Mara’s parents provided good education for their daughter. She spoke several languages and gained basic education in music, and then studied photography in Munich.

In 1900, at the age of 17 Mara already had her own photograph atelier in Belgrade, and later opened another one in Zagreb. Her atelier in Zagreb was a meeting spot for well known and respected young artists. Later on, Mara’s and her husband’s (Toma Rosandić, famous sculptor) home in Belgrade also became a place where notable persons such as painter Leposava Pavlović, writer Isidora Sekulić and Krista Đorđević often came to. Today their house is Toma Rosandić’s Museum.

In her photographs Mara documented the works of her husband and portrayed many famous people of her time. In 1909 she organized a one-month photography course in Belgrade. She was contributor to the first Serbian photograph magazine called the Photograph Review.
